My best friend and I decided to celebrate our 35th (actually forever 29th) birthday in Malta. It was the end of November so we hoped for better weather than it was in Slovakia (that wish came true) and we also hoped for some active social nightlife. That one was also accomplished. Let me give you some useful tips & tricks from our five-day trip to Malta at the end of November.
5-day itinerary for Malta
Marsaxlokk — St. Julia/Sliema — Valleta — Mdina — Comino Island — Popeye Village
Day n. 1 Marsaxlokk
After our arrival to Malta airport, we took a local bus to a small fisherman´s village Marsaxlokk. We checked-in in our beautiful accommodation Fisherman´s cove guesthouse (€64 with breakfast included – with free upgrade, too). During the day we explored the calm vibes of the village and also visited St. Peter´s natural pools with breathtaking scenery. There was no crazy active nightlife, yet we were enjoying its peaceful surrounding.
Day n. 2 St. Julian/Sliema
On our day n. 2 we also took the local transport and headed to St. Julian town – a party place of Malta. We checked-in in our new 3* hotel called Shoreline which was located in the heart of St. Julian, yet at a peaceful location. The price was €150 per two people and four nights. A pretty good deal. On this day we did a little sea plunge at the nearby beach as the weather was sunny and warm. During the night we explored local restaurants with seafood and socialized in local bars of Sliema and also St. Julian. We were partying at Paceville area (St. Julian) and enjoyed happy hour margaritas (4per€16).
Day n. 3 Valleta/Mdina/Rabat
On day n. 3 we wandered the streets of Sliema, took a short ferry ride for €2 to the capital of Malta Valleta and explored the local sightseeing and Christmas decoration. The architecture of Valleta´s buildings was spectacular. After few hours of exploring Malta´s capital, we decided to continue the adventure into the historical towns Mdina and Rabat. We were mesmerized by its charming narrow cobbled streets, peaceful vibes and rich historical architecture.
Day n. 4 Comino Island
On the day n. 4 we took an early bus 222 which took us all the way to Cirkewwa, around 45min bus ride. From there we took a round boat trip to Comino island and its magical Blue lagoon. The price of the round trip was €15 via cominoferries company. We hadn’t booked anything in advance, we booked the tickets on a spot. Easy peasy.
And the island? Ineffably beautiful! We walked across the whole island, enjoyed the secluded beach on the other side, swam in the gorgeous blue lagoon and hiked to the cliffs of Comino. On the way back we managed to “hitchhike” a boat and an Indonesian boat driver gave us a ride all the way to St. Julian for free. A perfect birthday gift. 😊
This island was my highlight without a shadow of doubt.
At night we met with one of my super nice and friendly MiliMundo followers from Slovakia and her cool kiwi boyfriend and two other cool Slovak guys and were partying till late night. Birthday celebrations continued …
Day n. 5 Popeye Village
Did you know that there was also a movie Popeye, not just the cartoon? Yep, I was surprised, too. In 1980 a popeye movie was filmed in Malta and the main acter was Robin Williams. Till these days you can find an artificially built village where a Popeye movie was filmed. As my best friend is an actress, we didn’t hesitate and paid a 3-hour visit of this village. The price was €15 and we didn’t regret spending any money on it. It was a unique visit full of talented local acters and actresses, charming vibes, short cinema visit, popcorn, postcard and heaps of laughs. Definitely recommended!
For the sunset we headed to a nearby beach between the bays of Ghajn Tuffieha. There was an outstanding massive rock where we could do a little walk around and watched the sunset. The views were ineffable.
How to move around Malta
The easiest was is to rent a car which is supposed to be cheap in Malta. However, we decided to stay “parking problems free” and used just the local transportation. The buses in Malta work perfectly. Directly at the airport we managed to get a free bus card, we put 20 euros credit on it and spent it while travelling across Malta. Each ride cost us only €1,85, only the buses starting with T letter cost €2,85 – the ones to and from the airport.
The accommodation in Malta
We had only two accommodations. The one in Marsaxlokk – Fisherman´s cove and the one in St. Julian – Shoreline hotel. We booked them pretty much in advance via the booking app.

Transportation (ferry included): €35
