7 days in Sardinia, Italy

I decided to visit Sardinia – the second biggest island of the Mediterranean in the low season for several reasons. Firstly, very cheap flight tickets (€40 direct return flight from Bratislava to Alghero). Secondly, not a lot of tourists on the island. And that is why I was able to spend amazing seven days in Sardinia and enjoy it to the fullest.

7 DAY ITINERARY ACROSS SARDINIA

Alghero – Cagliari – Giara di Gesturi – Bosa – Neptune´s grotto – La Pelosa beach/Stintino – Alghero

ACCOMMODATION

In Algero I had two types accommodation. The first night I stayed in a nice, clean, female bedroom in a hostel Piccolo Catalunya for 26 a night. The next day early morning I travelled to Cagliari where I had free accommodation for two nights via couchsurfing. And the last 4 nights in Sardinia I spent in a private accommodation called La Posento in Alghero for 150. If you want to contact the owner of La Posento, shoot me a message and I can pass you his number. It might be cheaper than via booking.

TRANSPORTATION

Within seven days I tried a bit of everything. I used local buses and trains, too. The tickets can be bought in advance via the app DropTicket or TrenItalia. I also tried blablacar app (it worked perfectly) and I also hitchhiked which had brought me the biggest joy and the sense of an adventure.

Of course, most people rent a car but as I was there alone and I don’t feel confident enough to drive by myself, I elected the option of other means of transportation.

The car rent was for around 45 a day in April 2025 (low season).

WHAT TO DO & SEE IN SARDINIA IN 7 DAYS

2 DAYS in CAGLIARI

I spent two days in Cagliari with my local couchsurfing host. I intentionally got lost in its narrow, cobbled streets and explored the monuments such as the Elephant Tower, St. Remy bastion, Yenne square and enjoyed the walk alongside the harbour. My host took me to various viewpoints such as Monte Urpinu viewpoint or the lighthouse Sant´Elia.

For salsa and bachata dancing I can recommend a place called Capolinea.

1 DAY in GIARA di GESTURI

This plateau located in central-southern Sardinia was formed around 2 million years ago due to volcanic activity. Giara di Gesturi is famous for the Giara wild horses, one of the last populations of wild horses in Europe. We spent hours walking around and watching the wild horses and its babies. It was a beautiful experience and completely for free.

1 DAY in BOSA

Bosa is a picturesque town on the western coast of Sardinia, one hour drive South from Alghero. It was the love at the first sight. The town´s vibrant, pastel-coloured houses, narrow cobbled streets, medieval tower houses, ruins of Malaspina castle, romantic river Temo, …

As an addition, it´s located only 3km from beautiful Bosa beach and its historical Bosa tower.

1 DAY in NEPTUNE´S GROTTO

I hitchhiked to Neptune´s cave, but you can also take a direct bus from Alghero (only once per day) OR you can take a boat trip. Neptune´s grotto is one of Sardinia´s most remarkable natural attractions situated at the base of the Capo Caccia. This sea cave was discovered by a local fisherman in the 18th century. It was named after Neptune, the Roman God of the sea.

It features impressive karst formations such as stalactites and stalagmites and the underground saltwater lake Lamarmora. In order to get there, you have to descend 654 steps carved into the cliffside and pay 14 entrance fee.

It was definitely one of the nicest caves I had ever visited.

1 DAY in LA PELOSA BEACH

La Pelosa beach, located near Stintino town on the northwestern tip of Sardinia, is considered to be one the nicest beaches of Sardinia. La Pelosa is renowned for its shallow, crystal-clear turquoise waters, fine white sand and the 16th century Spanish watchtower.

During summer time you have to make a reservation in order to get there, however, in April, at 9am, it was completely empty and just for me.

La Pelosa is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches I have seen in Europe.

My recommendation is also to do a little 10km loop hike to Torre del Falcone, the app mapy.cz will help you navigate yourself clearly. The views from the tower were ineffable.

1 DAY in ALGHERO

Although I stayed four nights in Alghero, I fully dedicated my time to it for only around 24 hours as it served me as a great base to do day trips around Alghero. But yes, I loved Alghero´s Old Town, historical monuments, fortifications, churches, harbour, beaches, … I guess it wasn’t my last visit of Alghero as I met wonderful people there who quickly became my new friends.

And actually, a month later I travelled to Alghero again for around 48 hours just to spend the time with the people I had met before. Once in Alghero, visit Maria Pia beach – that was my highlight.

SUMMARY

Sardinia exceeded my expectations. I didn’t expect it to be so green, so beautiful, so colourful. I usually don’t travel to the same places more than once but I Sardinia is my exception and I will gladly return there sooner or later again and again.
